Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow emerged in 2022 as one of the league’s best quarterbacks. The great play pays a heavy price, usually one that lands in the favor of the player. So Burrow, drafted in 2020, may already be on his way to his second contract, according to head coach Zac Taylor.
Taylor spoke about his quarterback in the team’s press conference on Monday after their loss to Kansas City in the AFC Championship Game. Via ProFootballTalk:
The Bengals will surely pick up his fifth-year option in the spring — unless they sign him to a lofty contract extension first. Either way, it stands to reason that Burrow will receive some financial security before the start of the 2023 regular season.
“Yeah, I think that starts now internally,” head coach Zac Taylor said in his Monday press conference when asked about Burrow being eligible for a second contract. “And so, again, just wrapped up with the team today. And as you go forward, you get a chance to start talking about Joe and all the other players who are up.”
So Taylor said that he believed the discussion on Joe Burrow and his next contract should begin now. Based on how the Bengals quarterback has played to this point, it’s incredibly hard to argue that point. He nearly led the franchise to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, a feat they’ve never done before.
He’s qualified a second contract for himself with his superb play on the field, his nerves of steel, and simply by staying out of the headlines also. It won’t be a surprise when Burrow nets his second contract.
